Dear New and Existing Customers…
Welcome to
The Children’s Bookshop in 2008!
As you may know, The Children’s Bookshop at Beecroft came under new management as of mid January of 2005. The Children's Bookshop, established in 1971, is the oldest specialist children's bookshop in NSW Australia. Its strength has always been the expert advice provided by the dedicated and enthusiastic staff who enjoy finding the right book for the young reader. This tradition of retail excellence continues.
The owner is Paul Macdonald, a local resident, a father of enthusiastic young readers and a lover of books. Paul has almost twenty years experience as an English teacher at both Primary and Secondary levels and has a Master of Education specialising in Gifted Education. His working life has extended to writing English texts, lecturing and consultancy. Paul’s particular interest is the fostering of boys’ literacy, enthusing reluctant readers and the development of reading schemes for gifted students. The primary goal of the new management team is certainly to build upon the store’s long history of retail excellence.
The existing staff members will thus continue to welcome the opportunity to offer a range of services to playgroups, pre-schools and schools including:
- A discount on all book purchases.15% on all titles – 20% for class sets of 20 or more. Free delivery to local schools.
- Advice for faculties and libraries on early childhood, infant, primary and secondary reading texts/ wide reading booklists.
- Book Talks for students.
- School and library visits where possible, Ruth Hipwell to Primary and Paul Macdonald to Secondary.
- Book Fairs as fund raisers. (See over the page)
- Story-Time for pre-schoolers twice a week, 9-45am in Tuesdays and Fridays.
- Morning tea and readings for Playgroups and Pre-Schools.
- Release of books as inspection copies.
- Holiday workshops and visits by authors encouraging the development of literacy skills. (See over the page)
We look forward to a continued relationship with your school. Your feedback is always appreciated. The website is currently being reviewed so that teachers may access information and communicate quickly with staff. Come in, speak to the staff and keep reading. We look forward to reading new titles and old favourites throughout 2008 and beyond.
Please contact the store directly if you need deposit account details and continue to phone, fax or e-mail orders so that we may provide efficient service.

Book Fairs…
Organised by The Children’s Bookshop
Give us a call to discuss organising a Book Fair at your school. We are flexible and cater for your students’ needs. And we cater for the staff’s needs too! How?
- We offer the possibility of staffing your Book Fair.
- When we staff the Book Fair, we set up, organise all monies, we sell and we clean up! And we know our titles so we can offer great service.
- The school receives 15% back as a Book Voucher to choose titles for the library (plus the school receives donated books from the Fair).
- We provide books for sale at a whole range of school events such as Orientation Days, Grandparent Days, Open Days, etc.
- We select titles in consultation with the school rather than provide a prepared selection of titles that may not recognise the special needs of your school.
Book Fairs are a great opportunity to promote literacy and also a great way to purchase additional titles for your library!

Events
We are More Than a Bookshop!
Our philosophy at The Children’s Bookshop is that a great children’s bookshop does more than just provide books for great readers. We are also passionate about promoting reading for all, building a love of books and generally encouraging individuals to become more immersed in a world of books and illustrations.
And we do this looking after our customers and by hosting a rapidly growing range of events .
- In 2006, over 400 kids participated in a range of writing and art-based workshops.
- Each holidays, we have a Writer in Residence or Artist in Residence.
- We host afternoon teas and signings with authors.
- We have Story-Time twice weekly with pre-schoolers.
- We organise school visits by authors in conjunction with publishers.
- We offer evening events for adults such as our Austen Evening course and our Champagne Evenings.
Ask us about current events (and have a look at some of visitors we have had at the shop or will be meeting in up-coming months!).
